What should my glucose levels be?
I’m 28 years old, and have just been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. Got a glucose meter but I’m not sure what should my readings be, how many times I should monitor and when should I check it.
Help really apreciated!
Initially, here’s how you should check:
1st thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Should be less than 110. Ideally in the mid 80′s or less.
Immediately before the first bite of food
2 hours after finished eating. It should be less than 140, but to be considered normal, less than 100.
If it is 140-199, then you would be prediabetic.
If you are above 200, then you most likely are diabetic.
This of course means that you don’t consume more than 75g of carbohydrates for that meal. More than that, your numbers could be higher. If you ate lots of protein with that, your numbers can be lower.
If you ate say greasy pizza the night before, it can elevate blood sugars for DAYS.
If you ate dreamfields pasta or spaghetti, you can spike from 4 hours to a whopping 12 hours later.
There is no maximum limit on how much or how often you should check.
But until you learn how your body reacts to certain foods, it’s best to check as often as you can afford.
To help control your blood sugars, follow a low carb, high protein diet, low in saturated fats.
Eating nuts is an EXCELLENT way to get calories and the really good fats.
Veggies are OK, but not many calories in them.
Citrus fruits have a lot of natural sugars in them.
Orchard fruits generally do not.
Most if not all kinds of berries are good, especially blueberries.
Cinnamon can help keep blood sugars down.
Sirloin is really good – lots of calories and much lower in bad fats than other beef products.
Apples are good, raisins are not, and neither is watermelon.
Google “What foods should a diabetic eat?” for a more complete list.
Also, your readings will change from hour to hour, day to day, and even week to week. Even if you ate exactly the same foods.
Go make yourself a free sugarstats account and start tracking your blood tests, what you ate, and any meds you are taking.
It can show you trends that you can print out for your doctor to evaluate.
If you see a huge spike in blood sugar, either eat less of that food or none of that food or pair it with a lot of protein.
