In a time gone by I was employed by the Boy Scouts as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). In this capacity I traveled to many remote locations to provide medical services and survival supplies to a group of scouts, their leaders and the camp staff.
When the scouts would be traveling away from the base camp for two days or more we required the group to carry emergency supplies. Besides the normal camping food rations, one of the items on this supply list was freeze dried food.
Freeze dried food lends itself to a long shelf life so the product can be used on more than one trip, is usually economically priced and come in a variety of meal choices. The groups were required to carry one freeze dried meal for each individual for each 48 hour period they were to be gone. This required survival food supply was done for a couple of reasons.
The first consideration when packing to travel in remote areas is the weight to be carried. By requiring one emergency food ration every 48 hours, it limited the added weight while assuring enough food to survive on.
The second reason this was done is in the event the group got lost the search team could be reassured that food was available for the first 48 hours of the search. Generally a lost group of scouts can be located in less than 48 hours and the knowledge of just having an extra camping food supply eases the stress of a lost group and those conducting the search.
Along with emergency kits, it is very beneficial for all groups camping, hiking or traveling in the wilderness to carry a sufficient survival food supply, like freeze dried food and nutrition bars, in case of an emergency. Most importantly, freeze dried foods keep all the nutrients and vitamins locked into the food, which is imperative in an emergency survival situation.
