Indian team is a new way to identify genes
They have just completed the largest study of protein-protein interactions in human cells that never took place. They claim to help identify these new genes and disease targets.
The findings, published in the edition of March Nature Genetics, are based on 25 000 protein-protein interactions collected by the team at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in the USA and the Institute of Bio-informatics (IOB) in Bangalore.
"It's the most detailed yet, the study describes the interaction of proteins that occur in cells during health and disease, "said Akhilesh Pandey, lead author and professor Assistant Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine.

The group's conceptual advance was made by comparing the nearly 25,000 human, 16,000 yeast, worm 5,500, and 25,000 fly protein-protein interactions.
This allowed the team to detect 36 Pandey completely new protein-protein interactions. Much of the team's work is based on data collected from the published literature.
"Our demonstration of an important protein that is not based on the number of interactions it has with other proteins is an important conceptual breakthrough, "said Pandey. showed that current methods of rapid tests detection of protein interactions are likely to lose some interactions, he said.
