This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni's Sano year of your life, which can be found at http://thehealthiestyearofyourlife.com. In this excerpt, Craig Pepin Donat shares on the experiences that led him to write The Big Fat Health and Fitness Lie.
The Healthiest Year of Your Life with Craig Pepin Donat a certified personal trainer and author of The Big Fat Health and Fitness Lie.
Kevin: Good evening everyone. So Craig, who has been in the industry fitness for over 26 years and with that, I guess that comes a little wisdom. Why not start with its history and how you got where you are now?
Craig: Sure Kevin. Well, first started in the fitness industry as a personal trainer who makes $ 3.50 an hour.
Kevin: Wow.
Craig: So I've been at it for a while and I grew up in the ranks in the fitness industry at the executive level. I was the president of two of the largest fitness organizations in the United States. I was the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, the largest chain of fitness clubs in the world operating in 11 countries. I also owned and successfully operated my own fitness company. I have visited 30 countries and health and fitness assessment throughout Russia, Asia, Europe. I've been in dozens of fitness conventions, bought millions of dollars in equipment, supplements and health and fitness related products and have also had the opportunity to train thousands of health professionals and fitness around the world and help them help others improve their lives. So this really kind of led me to where I am today, which is where I just get to where I want to do something else and so I wrote my book The Big Lie fitness and healthy fat founded Fit Advocate.com to I could create a platform to protect and improve the lives and health and fitness consumers.
Kevin: Now you mentioned his book, The Big Fat Health and Fitness Lie which I love. What is the big lie of fitness fat. Let's put on the table.
Craig: Why mince words? Let's dig right in. The lie is that there are millions of U.S. dollars around these industries getting richer while get sicker and fatter and all suspected solutions available to lose weight and improve our health, we are literally in the worse shape in the history of modern civilization. There are great benefits in sickness and in fat, and often people ask that and think, "Oh, so we live in the United States, we are in very Good Health and have the best health system," which is a complete fallacy. Here's an interesting fact that people should take into account, we are approaching 300 million people in the U.S. and we have every year 200 million of diseases diagnosed conditions that could be prevented with lifestyle changes simple.
Kevin: Wow.
Craig: And we in the United States, 270 million dollars to 3.7 billion prescriptions, not to cure anything, because there are really very few cures in modern medicine, medicine means above all to mask our symptoms. So taking into our bodies a lot of toxic chemicals and you know there is so much confusion and misinformation out there about health and fitness. So there is a great opportunity, unfortunately, for people to make money on the lack of knowledge that have about how to lose weight, improve your health, get fit and live better. So millions of people are out there paying thousands of dollars that have no chance to help them achieve their goal and that's really the big lie.
Kevin: And let me ask you this, you've been on the other side, you have been part of industry is doing a lot of money in fitness clubs and organizations and all. When did you suddenly say, "Hey, you know, Maybe I have to educate people about this. "
Craig: Well, first of all, I never felt that the club industry was a bad industry.
Kevin: All right.
Craig: And in my book I still am a big proponent of joining a gym for the average person, there are, of course, some warning how to get a quality club. I have an article on the ten worst tricks for the fitness industry. So I try to put things that I think are bad but There are many good things too, but what I realized while I was running all these clubs and trying to help people that I like to talk to thousands of consumers, face to face. As an important part of my career, my job was to go out and help, working with people in the field, club operators, managers, salespeople, staff of fitness, personal trainers, to talk to them about how to help people make decisions that are good for them and the guiding principle for Of course not always focus on making money, focus on helping people and you will make money as a natural outcome as a natural bi-product of helping people. That has always been one of my guiding principles, but to talk to all these consumers, found that the average person spends thousands of dollars in products and services that have no chance to help them. They spend hours and hours of time lost in information than ever to help them improve their health or change their lives. So I got tired, frustrated and very kind of outrage for all the quick fix solutions that are out there that people jump from one to another and not understand the real reason why they are in such bad shape health. So I wanted to try to educate them about all things, the lies and deceptions while trying to give them simple solutions for how to improve your health, how to lose weight, how to get fit, how to live better, how you feel better without tricks and no gimmicks for the rest of their lives. That's really what we are the large health and fitness is all about and that's really what Fit Advocate website in question.
Kevin: And you take a different approach his book, unlike many other books I've read about health and fitness and is related to addiction. You say that addiction is fed all this lie. What do you mean?
Craig: Well, many people live a lifestyle that destroys toxic caused me health and feeds this lie. So what I mean? Well, the definition of toxic, first, is poison and in our society we are surrounded of poisons in our air, is in the water, some of them can not avoid, and many of them can, however. Many of these poisons, we are not going to kill today, but instead what they do is that slowly and quietly deteriorate and destroy our health.
There are two specific types of poisons or toxins that I talk about that create these health problems. The first, of course, is the chemical exposure. There are thousands of untested chemical combinations in our food supply to improve taste, texture, color or to extend shelf life. A low-calorie, low carb foods containing toxic sweeteners that has contributed to obesity and diabetes. We have been conditioned to believe that sodium fluoride, for example, is good for our teeth. However, it is a known chemical waste by-product of the aluminum industry and fertilizers phosphate. This chemical has been pumped into our water supply and put into our dental hygiene products for years but fluoridation has been flatly rejected by many developed countries because of the dangers and lack of really any scientific evidence of any health benefit. Beyond that, we have chemicals toxic products in our homes, our cleaning products, personal hygiene products. Fruits and vegetables have been treated with herbicides and pesticides. Chickens and cows are fed ground chicken and meat. Then pumped full of antibiotics to prevent diseases of the appalling conditions in which they live and where they are slaughtered. So we have all these, you know, all chemical toxicity. That is paramount.
The second is the increased exposure to toxic substances is related to stress, and people do not realize this but up to 80% of all disease is the result of stress and having the ability to travel around the world and visit, you know, I think I've been to over 40 countries, finds that America is the most stressed country in the world. We work more than any other activity other than sleep. Enough think of our normal life, get up every day and we're running on empty from morning to night. We have the pressures at work, at home, challenges to maintain some kind of relationship with our loved ones happy. We have the demands of children, trying to pay bills. We have all the negativity in the news. We're all trying to live the American dream is based on financial freedom, but the truth is only a fraction of people out there never really achieve the dream American and the rest of us are just trying to survive, and, you know, we are buried in a mountain of debt. All these things add up to a lot of concerns and stress and cope with this stress, what do we do? We drink, we smoke, we take drugs, over eat, eat the wrong foods and spend hours in front TV or surf the web. All of these activities, unfortunately make us fat, lazy and out of shape, and what happens is that ill health is created From this addictive lifestyle it creates, and opens the door for these big fat health and fitness is. One is that firms in the market, manufacturing and selling products to the market and have no chance of helping us and then, of course, the worst is when we look at synthetic chemicals, drugs prescription, as the first line of defense to handle our self inflicted health problems. So it really makes a lot of issues we have to deal with a view to be healthy, but people need to understand the basis of where to start the case.
Kevin: Yes. How can you take that kind of addiction or dependence quotes personality and turn that success in fitness?
Craig: Well the first thing you do is identify it.
Kevin: Yes.
Craig: You have to realize it. Here, here's a fact that is important enough that people should know the reason number one that people give for not exercising regularly do not have enough time, okay. However, the average American watches four hours of television per day. So there's a problem there with priority and people have to realize that time is the most important and most valuable asset we have, because once that has been you can not recover. If you want to improve your health, you have to take time to do all things necessary to enhance and improve your health and your life and not just exercise, but it is one of the key components. So you have to first understand the problems and then have the right motivation and set the right priorities for get where they need to be.
