What makes horror scary?
Now, a bit of background info.
I am a software designer, the leader of darkeSoft Softwares ( http://darkesoft.com ). I am right now, working on a computer game for Halloween. I am going for the Pokemon/Zelda top-down look.
Now, back to the question.
What would really thrill you? Is it footsteps? Blood? Gore,Shadows, Music, Mystery, Death, Deceit, Aloneness, Helplessness, Pressure or the Unknown?
What is it that makes people scared? What instills a paralytic fear and chills the marrow of your bones? In essence, what causes fear?
Ok, thanks, that really helped. All of you. I will have my game ready by October 31st. I will leave this open for more ideas, and I’ll leave the voting on best answer to the people.

Definatly the music…
When something scary is about to show up…make the music get really suspenceful….and make whatever it is have it pop out from the place where you least expect….
Also missing body parts *Ex a pale pale woman with no eyes, jet black hair..and a mouth open spewing blood…quickly dragging herself over toward you with a pick axe in hand……wouldn’t that make you a little spooked?*
Dark chase scenes…with really dramatic music *look to the texas chainsaw massacre for examples..chases like that*
The colouring and lighting also gives the horror effect….if the lighting is dim and murky and the colours are all dark *Ex maroon gray, navy, dark green..black off white* it would generally give a more spooky feel….pair it with some offsettling music and your good….
Do gore…but make it believable…or even better make it sick…and gut wrentching..*Ex. the killer kills an innocent bystander add detail as eyes are clawed out and eaten…..and intestines are pulled out a strewn about the area…and end the scene with the killer looking directly at the player with hungry murderous eyes….*
With horror it’s all about making you uncomfortable….so throw in some rotting bodies, bloody torture utensils..and add that with a classic fear..like a clown or doctor…
Really look to old and new horror movies alike….see what scares you, see what scares your friends…and then take it and mash it all together…with good graphics of course! Best of luck!
