They tease me in the office, what should I do?
My name is Octavius Guy, and I am employed by a Mr. Blake, a lawyer, in his office as an errand boy. I did not finish my school because my mother has a lot of children, and I have to work to help her. My employer, Mr. Blake, is very pleased with me. We had a case lately, which involved a celebrated policeman Sergeant Cuff, and he, too, praised me, called me “the brightest and cleverest little chap he has met with”. I have somewhat big eyes, so adult clerks in the office
call me “Gooseberry”, either for fun, or from envy, I can’t tell. Or maybe they just know that I can’t do anything in return: they are adults, and I am just a boy. How can I stop them teasing me, what should I do?
mr. guy, i don’t have to be a detective to know that you must remember the old saying “sticks & stones” & not be quite so thin skinned. at some point in their lives, everyone gets a nick-name that they do not like. look at sergeant cuff – i’m sure he is teased about his roses.
keep on doing your job. sergeant cuff is a very important man & if you stick with him, i’m sure you will go places. stone the crows, boy, the moon’s the limit if you keep doing your best. they say diamonds are a girl’s best friend – i say hard work is a man’s. you probably don’t realize that you are involved in a “first” & you should be proud. it is as if you are serving the brahmin – working with the best, as it were.
