Pregnant women undergoing drug testing without their knowledge or consent to the testing. Authorities prosecute them after being alerted by the hospital staff.
NO! I would call this our biological wiring. However, that doesn’t mean we should avoid providing these people with resources when they are ready to make a big commitment to change their ways.
Addictions are hard wired at a low level. For example, humans evolved in an environment that put humans through periods of feast and famines. Humans who ate excessively during feasts were more likely to survive. Rat studies show that animals fed the Standard American Diet (SAD) ate excessively and became addicted to food, just like many humans. They would climb electrified fences just to eat junk food. Similar addictions provided some kind of survival benefit.
I believe the best author on this subject is former head of the FDA, Dr. David Kessler. His book describes addictions (with a focus on American foods) and how they are all similar to other addicts and even crack cocaine users. He offers suggestions and treatments using the best methods available today. People must conscientiously plan their lives and set rules for themselves. People can learn to overlay the existing circuitry in their brain with some effort, but it isn’t easy.
By the way, addicts of all kinds show the same brain chemistry related to domamine. Cheese can produce the same reaction in some people as a crack addict.
