
Breastfeeding studies point to the health, economic benefits
Amid intense debate on health care in recent months, Two recent studies demonstrate the great benefits of breast-feeding. A Boston study showed that if 80-90% of women breastfeed their newborns U.S. for at least six months between $ 10.5 and $ 13 million saved in health care and other expenses of each year and more than 700 lives, most newborns be saved.
Another study in Australia showed that breastfeeding for more than six months is good for mental health. The study traced the children 2900 14 years and said that breastfeeding may help babies cope better with stress and also may signal a greater bond between mother and child.
"We've known about the many advantages of breastfeeding for years," said Michael Manhart, executive director of the Couple to Couple League (CCL). " And it seems that more and more scientific studies to back these claims all the time. "
The Boston study, conducted in part by the Harvard Medical School and carried in the April issue of Pediatrics, looked at ten diseases known to affect children, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Infant, stomach viruses, ear infections, asthma, juvenile diabetes and childhood leukemia. About 43% of women in at least some breastfeeding for six months, but only 12% exclusively breastfeed their babies for six months.
The Australian survey was conducted by the Western Australia Pregnancy Cohort, and published in the April issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
